Machu Picchu is one of those places that justifies the considerable effort of getting there. The 15th-century Inca citadel, set on a narrow ridge above the cloud forest with mountains rising on all sides, is genuinely breathtaking in ways that photographs – however excellent – cannot fully convey. Here's how to experience it properly.

Getting There

The most common route: fly to Cusco, acclimatise for 2 days minimum (altitude sickness is real at 3,400m; take it seriously), train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (the nearest town to Machu Picchu), then bus or hike to the citadel. The train journey through the Sacred Valley and then down into the cloud forest is spectacular in its own right.

Booking

Machu Picchu now operates a strict timed entry system with limited daily visitors (4,500 per day). Tickets sell out weeks in advance in peak season (June–August). Book through the official website (machupicchu.gob.pe) or through a reputable tour operator. Circuit routes 1, 2, and 3 offer different perspectives; the combination of circuits 1 and 3 is recommended for first-timers.

The Inca Trail

The four-day classic Inca Trail is one of the world's great hikes: ancient stone path, cloud forest, high mountain passes (up to 4,215m), and Inca ruins all the way to the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu. Only 500 people per day are permitted (including guides and porters). Book 6–12 months in advance for peak season dates. March to May and September to November are the best conditions.

When to Visit

June–August is dry season and peak crowds. December–March is wet season with fewer tourists but cloud cover that can obscure the views. The classic misty morning photograph happens more reliably in the wet season – the low cloud that rolls through at dawn often clears by mid-morning to reveal the full panorama.

Practical Notes

Arrive on the first bus (5:30am) to be in the citadel before the crowds build. Bring sun protection – the altitude and equatorial sun combine to burn skin rapidly. The site has no food vendors inside; bring water and snacks. Hiring a licensed guide for 2–3 hours significantly deepens the historical context and is highly recommended.
