Is there anything left to say about Paris? As it turns out, yes – because Paris keeps changing, and because the most meaningful Paris experiences are precisely those that tourist guides can't really capture. The trick isn't finding the hidden Paris (every arrondissement has been discovered) – it's giving yourself permission to simply inhabit it.

The Paris of 2026

Post-Olympics Paris has invested heavily in its infrastructure. The new RER E extension connects the western suburbs more directly. The banks of the Seine, closed to cars between 2016 and 2024 and briefly disrupted for Olympic construction, are permanently pedestrianised again. And a new generation of chefs is making the city's restaurant scene more exciting than it's been in two decades.

Neighbourhoods Worth Knowing

Le Marais (3rd/4th) – the city's most heterogeneous neighbourhood: Jewish quarter, gay village, high-fashion boutiques, medieval architecture and contemporary art galleries within walking distance of each other. Belleville (11th/20th) – immigrant communities, outdoor murals, excellent Vietnamese and Chinese food. South Pigalle (9th) – the neighbourhood Parisians actually eat dinner in: excellent wine bars, natural wine shops, small restaurants with no English menus.

What to Actually Do

The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower are worth seeing once. But the Musée d'Orsay for Impressionism is more manageable and arguably more beautiful. The Palais Royal gardens are peaceful even in high season. Shakespeare and Company bookshop rewards an hour of browsing. A morning at a street market (Marché d'Aligre, Marché des Enfants Rouges) is more authentically Parisian than any famous monument.

Eating

Book dinner in advance. Parisians eat at 8pm; arriving at 7:30 without a reservation is optimistic. For lunch: the formule (set menu) at a neighbourhood bistro is the finest value in European dining. A glass of wine, an entrée, a plat, a café – often under €20. For breakfast: stand at the counter of any bakery for a croissant and a coffee. This is non-negotiable.
